About The Shah Gallery
A free, public domain photographic archive of 390 images documenting Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran, and the Pahlavi era.
What is in the collection
The archive gathers photographs from the reign of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi (1941–1979): official portraits, state visits and diplomatic receptions, military parades and inspections, ceremonies and anniversaries, the Imperial family, and informal moments away from official duties. The photographs span roughly four decades of Iranian history, ending with the Iranian Revolution of 1979.
How the photographs are described
Each photograph has its own page carrying a written description of what is visible in the frame — clothing, uniforms, setting, action, composition. These descriptions are deliberately literal. The archive does not assign names, dates, places or events to individual photographs, because the provenance of the collection does not support that level of attribution with confidence. Where you recognise a subject or an occasion, the identification is yours to make, not ours to assert.
This approach keeps the catalogue honest and makes the collection genuinely searchable: you can find "a man in a flight suit beside an aircraft" without the archive having to claim who, when or where.

Every photograph in this archive is in the public domain. You may download, copy, modify, publish and sell derivative works without asking permission and without crediting this site. There are no watermarks, no registration, and no paywall. Full terms are set out in the terms of service.
